November 2023 Newsletter
Editor’s Note
What I write in an Editor’s Note like this or a personal submission should not represent the entire platform, but I would like to acknowledge our awkward silence on current events and say that I’m sorry and that I don’t feel like I am well equipped or informed enough to respond to everything I see on social media for Overachiever, especially when I am also publishing a monthly newsletter two weeks late.
I want to acknowledge the pain and outrage all over the world over the recent events in Gaza and say again that I’m deeply sorry for the victims on both sides, but I don’t want to virtue-signal or spread the wrong information on our platform. I’m going to let the news be the news and encourage our readers to seek information from reliable sources to learn about what’s happening and how to help.
And on the topic of current events, I have received several messages through our contact form raising serious concerns about a former staff member’s social media account - and they have every right to be angry and to stand up for what they believe in. However, these concerns have been brought up by their university, and I’d like to take this matter seriously and seek to understand the full situation. All I can really say is that their opinions are very much their own and does not represent Overachiever Magazine.
This platform was created to uplift AANHPI voices and to provide a safe community to share our stories and art. This platform is also 100% contributor and volunteer-based, so if we do not have anything on our website covering a certain topic, it’s because we have not received a submission on that topic. You are welcome to share your thoughts on our platform, however, we will not allow hateful speech on our platform, meaning, that we will not tolerate language that is discriminatory, profane, or invoking violence to others.
I have been wrong in the past to repost and share posts that I thought were very important and stood up for the oppressed, but I was corrected that it was misinformation and I do not want to repeat that mistake again, especially on Overachiever Magazine. Again, what I write should not necessarily represent the entire platform. If you’d like to share your thoughts, you are more than welcome to in our new Letters to the Editor section.
First Things First
1.Mission Statement
Overachiever Magazine is committed to creating a diverse and inclusive online platform which amplifies the voices of AANHPI women, non-binary people, and other gender minorities. This is a safe space for those who find themselves at the intersections between Asian, woman, and LGBTQ identities. We strive to discuss a wide range of topics about AANHPI culture, entertainment, life, and other social issues faced within our community. Together, we will continue to explore new ideas, perspectives, and learn from each other month after month.
2. House Rules
Whether you are new here or are a returning reader, we’d like to remind all of our Overachievers to maintain a high standard of respect in our online community, even and especially if we discuss complex issues. This includes our website, social media, and the comments section! We will not allow hateful speech on our platform, meaning, that we will not tolerate language that is obscene, profane, hurtful, or discriminatory to others.
Having that said, Overachiever Magazine is not responsible for the words or actions of any participant. By participating in our community, you are solely responsible for your interaction with others and your conduct does not necessarily represent OM as a whole, and Overachiever Magazine reserves the right to remove content and comments which we feel violate our House Rules.
3. Disclaimer
Overachiever Magazine does not claim to speak for all AANHPI women, non-binary people, and other gender minorities. We are just here to provide an inclusive platform that invites them to speak for themselves. Our goal is to hold up the platform that uplifts underrepresented Asian voices with compassion and empathy as members of the group ourselves.
Creator’s Club
Creator’s Club is a community of talented AANHPI creatives of all sorts ( artists, photographers, video makers, musicians, etc.) who want to showcase their work on Overachiever Magazine. Not all creators are influencers, so consider joining the Creator’s Club so that we can help broadcast your artwork for you! Learn more about Creator’s Club and meet our current club members: Nell Valle, Karlee Mong, and yours truly!
