“Mom, would you wash my back” by Angela Nguyen

I wish I could still fit in the red tub you put in the shower

With the fading children playing at the bottom of the basin

They disappeared as I grew up and outgrew your bathing hand

I never grew much more

I may not fit inside the red tub, the thau đỏ

But you can still help me wash my hair with your calloused hands

Now that tub is gone.

It’s too old and worn, used by the four siblings after me.

I’m too old now, but you said I’ll always be your baby.

Once more, before I grow any older,

Before you shrink even more,

I want to sit in the red tub again

To feel small again in my rapidly evolving environment

To dream of my future instead of planning it

To be cared for by you before I have to care for you.

Someday, I’ll wash my child in a red tub in the shower.

I’ll pretend to be you and run a house instead of playing house.

But until that someday, Mom, Mẹ, let me be in the red tub again.

Overachiever Magazine was started by Rehana Paul in October of 2018 to give a platform to all Asian women, non-binary people, and other gender minorities.

Our name is poking fun at the stereotype that all Asians are overachievers, especially Asian women, non-binary people, and other gender minorities. It’s also in recognition of all of us who have had no choice but to be overachievers: managing societal expectations, family obligations, and educational opportunities, all while fighting the patriarchy.

We have grown since then, putting out bimonthly issues (we are contributor powered: apply to write for our next one!), and weekly reviews of culture, and news that is important to us.

You can find announcements, more news, and get to know our staff on social media: give us a follow, and learn how you can get involved today!

We do not claim to speak for all Asian women, non-binary people, and other gender minorities. We are just here to give them a place to speak for themselves.

We hope you’ll join us.
